Carbondale’s 29th Annual Spring Clean Up and Recycling Day is April 18

KCB calls for Clean-up Volunteers: Carbondale’s 29th Annual Spring Clean Up and Recycling Day is April 18, 2015 8:00-12:00

Volunteers are invited to join Keep Carbondale Beautiful Saturday, April 18 at 8 a.m. at Turley Park for the annual Spring Cleanup and Recycling Day.  After they sign in, volunteers will receive bags and gloves, go to an assigned location, and collect litter and recyclables.  Bags are then left on street corners to be picked up by crews from City of Carbondale’s Maintenance and Environmental Services. KCB Executive Director Sarah Heyer noted, “We could not do this without the cooperation of City staff, who make sure this goes off without a hitch.” The Rotary Club of Carbondale has a special role: they weigh all the trash and recyclables. Prizes are given in several categories for the most litter collected. The workday ends with lunch, courtesy of Arnold’s Market, and distribution of T-shirts to the first 200 volunteers.

This year there will be an orientation to recyclables. In addition to plastic, glass, and metal, volunteers will be advised to watch for electronics, which must be handled separately. Volunteers will be asked to hang on to electronics and bring those items back to Turley Park themselves.

KCB’s Spring Cleanup & Recycling Day is part of Keep America Beautiful’s nationwide Great American Cleanup and receives funding from the Illinois EPA and the City of Carbondale. Local event sponsors include Burris Disposal, Southern Recycling Center, CIMCO Recycling, and the Neighborhood Co-op.

Each year, over 200 volunteers collect almost a ton of trash and recyclables from the streets of Carbondale. Those numbers are expected again this year, provided there are enough volunteers.  Pre-registration is encouraged: forms can be downloaded from http://www.keepcb.org/spring-cleanup–recycling-day.html.  Heyer added, “We have already received a couple dozen registrations, but there is almost no limit to the number of volunteers we can use.”
