Human Relations Commission
City of Carbondale,
May 5, 2015
For over a year, a major topic in the media and in communities nationwide has been about the police and the African American community
they serve. The Carbondale Human Relations Commission is hosting a forum, moderated by Joseph Brown, SJ, professor of Africana Studies at SIU, and featuring some invited guests, to address the issues around race and policing.
The forum, entitled “Community and Policing,” will be held Tuesday, May 12, from 7:30-9 pm, at the Carbondale Civic Center. It is free and open to the public. Panelists will speak briefly on a topic, providing a critical and historical context for discussion, followed by small-group discussion.
HRC Chair Jerrold Hennrich said, “We invite the people of Carbondale to enter into this community conversation. By listening to one another and thinking together, we may get a firmer grasp of what’s going on and a clearer idea about what kinds of changes we want made.”
